It’s something we all crave and yet it can be tricky to find

There’s a popular song by Bobby McFerrin called “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” It’s a great sentiment. If we could all stop worrying and choose to be happy, that would be wonderful, but for most people, it’s not that simple.

We all have the instinctive wish to be happy and to see the people we care about most happy too.  It underlies every action we do, every choice we make.  Nothing wrong with that.

Yet at times it appears to be unattainable.
Obstacles are standing in your way. It’s natural
to become frustrated when you can’t seem to
find happiness in anything and think,
“Why can’t I just be happy?”

The reality is you can’t force yourself to be happy
if you’re not.  But you can learn how to choose happiness and rise above your circumstances.

If we can just find that great job, get a raise, lose those five pounds (or even better ten pounds), happiness will follow. Instead of finding happiness, we end up living stressed, overwhelmed, burned out, feeling empty and mentally exhausted as a result.

Why Practicing Happiness is Important

In addition to making us feel good, studies have found that happiness actually improves other aspects of our lives. Here is an overview of some of the good stuff that research has linked to happiness.

Happy people are:

More successful in multiple life domains, including marriage, friendship, income, work performance, and health.
Get sick less often and experience fewer symptoms when they do get sick.
Have more friends and a better support system.
Are more helpful and more likely to volunteer—which also makes you happier!
Have an easier time navigating through life since optimism eases pain, sadness, and grief.
Have a positive influence on others and encourage them to seek happiness as well, which can act as reinforcement.
Smile more, which is beneficial to your health.
Exercise more often and eat more healthily.
Are happy with what they have rather than being jealous of others.
Are more productive and more creative, and these effect extends to all those experiencing positive emotions.
